Delhi Metro Routes Go Organic

December 2, 2025 by Vikram Leave a Comment

If you’ve ridden the Delhi Metro recently, you might have noticed something slightly different—not in the sound of the wheels or the colour of the trains, but in the atmosphere itself. DMRC (Delhi Metro Rail Corporation) has taken a novel step toward wellness by experimenting with herbal and organic coatings in select metro coaches. These coatings are said to reduce the build-up of airborne pathogens and create a cleaner, more organic environment—and in a city where millions depend on public transport daily, even small steps feel momentous.

Delhi Metro has been a lifeline of the capital for over two decades now, not just in terms of infrastructure and convenience, but also as a trendsetter in public transport innovation. It was among the first in India to become carbon-neutral and to introduce baggage-scanning check-ins akin to airport security. Now, with the pilot of anti-microbial herbal coatings, it signals a thoughtful shift toward making the daily journey not just efficient, but healthy.

What feels especially heartwarming is how subtle yet considered this initiative is. In post-COVID India, the collective anxiety over hygiene in crowded spaces lingers. So, while most people won’t actively notice the herbal coating or even know it’s there, the reassurance it brings—especially during rush hours—is unmistakable. Herbs and organic sanitizers derived from neem and tulsi, long valued in Indian households for their medicinal properties, are now becoming part of urban commutes. There’s something earthy and balanced in that idea.

Moreover, this initiative shows that wellness need not be extravagant. It can be a part of everyday systems that millions interact with. Perhaps other cities will take cues, and slowly our public services may incorporate more elements of traditional Indian wisdom into modern designs. Delhi Metro’s foray into organic transport hygiene can spark a broader conversation about how to weave sustainability, health and public service together.

As Delhi hurtles forward into its ever-dynamic growth, moves like this remind us that progress is most meaningful when it is mindful. So next time you board that slightly fresher-smelling, subtly calmer coach, take a moment to inhale deeply and appreciate how health, heritage and modernity can ride together on the same track.
