Dhanteras 2024: Why Gen Z Is Embracing Gold Again

December 3, 2025 by Vikram Leave a Comment

Gold has always had a special place in Indian traditions, especially during festivals like Dhanteras, the day that marks the beginning of the five-day Diwali celebrations. It’s a time when gold shops across the country shimmer under fairy lights, welcoming eager buyers enticed by both tradition and a belief in auspicious beginnings. But this year, something fascinating is happening. Gen Z, a generation more known for cryptocurrency and instant gratification, is suddenly flocking to buy gold—only it’s not in the traditional form.

The rise of lightweight, minimalistic gold jewellery and digital gold investments are giving this ancient tradition a modern makeover. Instagram and Pinterest are flooded with gold-styled reels and aesthetic shots of dainty chains, stackable rings, and even nose pins being flaunted by young influencers. Online platforms report a significant spike in “gold gifts under ₹5000” searches. It seems this Dhanteras, gold is not just rooted in custom but is being reimagined as a statement of style and smarts. For a generation that oscillates between nostalgia and innovation, gold fits neatly into that hybrid identity. It signifies permanence in a fleeting world and wealth that’s both wearable and emotional.

Interestingly, digital gold—available on apps like Paytm, PhonePe, and even Google Pay—is drawing in the younger crowd who want the security of the metal without physical storage hassles. It’s becoming a form of micro-saving, with many sharing their ‘first ever gold gram’ purchases on social media stories. There’s a clear message in this movement: value never really goes out of fashion, only its expression evolves.

Dhanteras 2024 is shaping into more than a moment to shop or invest. It’s offering a cultural bridge between generations. Parents see their children keeping customs alive, albeit reshaped, and youngsters get to reconnect with rituals in ways that feel authentic to them. As the city glows under pre-Diwali lights, this golden trend is perhaps telling us that no matter how modern we become, some traditions are simply too luminous to let go.
