Dilli’s Butter Chicken Battle

November 27, 2025 by Vikram Leave a Comment

In Delhi, food isn’t just sustenance—it’s an emotion. From street stalls billowing with the perfume of spices to glitzy restaurants tucked into the city’s evolving skyline, the capital thrives on its ever-unfolding culinary stories. One dish, in particular, has sparked endless appetites and now—viral debate: butter chicken. The creamy, rich and mildly spiced treasure of North India has recently taken center stage in a heated online discussion stirring across food reels, Instagram polls, and Twitter threads. Delhiites are once again passionately fighting over a deceptively simple question: Who really makes the best butter chicken in the city?

The debate reignited after a famous Delhi food influencer with over a million followers shared her “ultimate” top three butter chicken picks—ones that left out fan favorites like Moti Mahal, the Old Delhi institution often credited with inventing the dish in the 1950s. Instead, her list included new entrants from South Delhi and a cloud kitchen from Gurugram. Almost overnight, the post became cannon fodder for every food-loving Dilliwala. Comment sections burst into flames with nostalgia-driven arguments, references to age-old eateries, and calls to rediscover the “OG” tastes of Delhi.

Diving into this hot (and buttery) topic reveals more than just culinary preferences. It showcases how food is deeply interwoven with identity and community in Delhi. For old-timers, butter chicken is a bridge to childhood memories, of family dinners and lazy Sundays. For younger audiences exploring the city through Zomato ratings and foodie vlogs, it’s an adventurous discovery they want personalized. And therein lies the beauty—and the tension. In a dynamically evolving city, both versions of the truth coexist.

Perhaps we shouldn’t look at this debate as a culinary clash but a celebration of variety. The dish that once originated from recycled tandoori chicken and leftover curry has grown to symbolize both tradition and innovation. Whether one sticks to velvety classics at Daryaganj or tries the smoky twist at modern bistros in Hauz Khas, every pick seems to excite someone—and infuriate someone else. Isn’t that the magic of a truly loved dish?

So what can we as Delhiites—and butter chicken lovers—take away from all this? Maybe it’s time to turn these impassioned debates into delicious explorations. Instead of focusing on the “best,” perhaps we can embrace what the varieties say about our city: its decades-deep recipes, its new culinary talent, its tech-enabled food scene, and of course, its fierce pride in even a spoonful of gravy.

This weekend, consider venturing out or ordering in from a lesser-known kitchen. Talk to that cab driver about their favorite spot, or drop by your grandmother’s trusted dhaba stall. Document the journey. Tag your city. Share not just what’s on your plate, but what it made you feel. Because food, after all, is never just about taste—it’s about memory, belonging, and joy.

Try a new twist. Pay homage to the old. But above all else, enjoy the dish that has stirred everyone’s hearts in Delhi—and reminded us that nothing unites (and divides) us more deliciously than a bowl of perfectly buttery chicken.
