Delhi’s Mango Obsession Returns

November 29, 2025 by Vikram Leave a Comment

It’s officially mango season in Delhi. The scent of ripe Chaunsa, Langda, and Dussehri now fills local bazaars and street corners alike, with vendors proudly displaying their golden harvest. There’s something magical about the way this city transforms when mangoes arrive—it’s not just fruit, but memory, nostalgia, and pure joy wrapped up in a juicy bite.

This year, Delhiites seem more excited than ever. Maybe it’s the post-pandemic freedom to roam crowded mandis like Azadpur or INA again. Maybe it’s the early arrival of certain varieties or just the vibrant chatter around mango trails on Instagram and Reels. Videos of tastings, hampers, and market runs are flooding timelines. Online delivery platforms are offering curated mango boxes, while luxury shops like Foodhall have limited-edition aam dessert menus. Even small-scale home chefs are doing brisk business selling mango kulfis, pickles, and cheesecakes from tiny kitchens in South Delhi.

But it’s more than just the fruit—it’s our rituals. The peeling, slicing, the pride in sharing one’s favorite variety, the debate over whether Alphonso is too overrated or if the Malihabadi Dussehri reigns supreme. For Delhi families, especially, mango season is synonymous with togetherness. Children squabble over the seed, elders roll aamras with chilled milk, and some unforgettable meals begin with tangy aam panna shots to beat the city’s growing heat.

What stands out this season is the positive push towards native varieties. Delhi has, for some years, been swept by the Alphonso obsession, but now more people are exploring lesser-known types like the Bengal-based Himsagar or UP’s Safeda. Farmer cooperatives and local produce boxes on social media are doing a commendable job highlighting the incredible regional diversity of mangoes—reminding us that this isn’t just food, it’s cultural heritage.

So, take a moment on your next grocery run to chat with your fruit vendor. Taste something you haven’t before. Share an aam moment with someone you love. In a city that’s often rushed, mango season teaches us Delhiites something timeless: to pause, savor, and smile.
